Candle Safety 101: What Every Home Spa Owner Should Know

Candles do a lot of the work in a good evening routine — low light, steady scent, a visual cue that the day is winding down. They're also an open flame in a room with towels, robes, and running water, so a few basic habits are worth having before you build a routine around them.

Placement Matters More Than People Think

Keep candles at least a foot from anything fabric — towels, robes, curtains, shower liners — and off the edge of the tub itself. A stable, flat surface away from airflow (an open window, a fan, a door you open and close) keeps the flame predictable instead of flickering toward whatever's nearby. This is also part of why good bathroom lighting matters beyond just candles — a warm lamp or dimmer gives you most of the same mood without an open flame to manage.

Trim the Wick, Every Time

A wick trimmed to about a quarter inch before each burn is the single biggest factor in how a candle behaves. Untrimmed wicks mushroom, smoke more, and burn hotter and less evenly — which also means the candle finishes faster than it should. This one habit fixes most of the "why is my candle burning weird" complaints.

Never Leave It Burning in an Empty Room

This is the obvious one and the one people break most often, usually right at the point a bath routine calls for it — stepping out to grab a robe or answer the door. Blow it out if you're leaving the room for more than a minute or two, even briefly. It's a small interruption to the ritual and a genuinely important habit.

Know When to Stop

Stop burning a candle once about half an inch of wax remains at the bottom, or if the container gets hot to the touch — both are signs it's nearing the end of its safe burn life. Glass containers can crack under sustained heat once wax runs low, so this isn't just about getting your money's worth.

Once you've got the safety basics down, our guide to choosing a relaxing candle scent and candle vs. reed diffuser vs. oil diffuser comparison can help you build out the rest of the sensory side of your routine.
